So you want to write for travel magazines
Home

If you want an article published in a travel magazine, you will need to provide the editor with something original.

Editors of travel magazines receive around 50 articles each week, but only 10% are adequate for publication, according to Jonathan Lorie, a former editor of Wexas Traveller magazine.

To increase your chances of publication, write something topical that has not been covered in the past two years, he told the Adventure Travel and Sports Show that took place in London on January 13th to 15th.

Sometimes travel magazines have space for features written by freelancers, said Lorie. But for a feature to be published, as well as being original, it must be written in the house style, meet content requirements and fit in with the publication schedule.

Make sure the article says what you felt about a place, not what you thought about it, and that it has an angle.

Editors are not interested in opinion pieces or who the writer travelled with - unless this is central to the article. They do not normally need news, as this, health, and most interviews are covered by in-house staff.

Submit the article well in advance of the deadline and find out if the editor wants it sent in by e-mail, on CD or by post.

Jonathan Lorie teaches travel writing at the Mary Ward Centre in London, UK, and is director of Travellers' Tales, a company running travel writing and photography courses.
