10 ways to spend an active afternoon in Barcelona
Home

Stretch your legs in Barcelona. The city is easy to stroll around. Most sights are accessible and the surrounding hills provide some varied terrain.

If you want to hop on buses and the metro, a ten-journey (T-10) ticket costs €6.30. For more options, visit www.emt-amb.com. A €17 one-day Barcelona Card includes free or discounted entry to some museums and attractions.

For general information about the city, check out www.catalunyatourism.com before you go. If you are heading out of Barcelona, look up train times with renfe, Spain's national railways.

Here are 10 ways to spend an active afternoon in Barcelona:

  1. Orientate yourself on a two-hour walking tour that departs from the Turisme de Barcelona information office in the central Plaça de Catalunya. Nearest metro is Catalunya. For prices and times see: www.barcelonaturisme.com.

  2. Explore Antoni Gaudi's Park Güell with its colourful mosaics and architecture. Nearest metro is Vallcarca.

  3. Visit the Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona (Museum of Modern Art). Adults €7. A guided tour every Wednesday and Saturday at 18.00 is included in the entry price. Nearest metro is Catalunya. For opening times and details of exhibitions see: www.macba.es.

  4. View the FC Barcelona stadium from the grandstand.

  5. Take the kids to Tibidabo amusement park. For details see: www.barcelonaturisme.com.

  6. Head up to the Montjuic district on its funicular railway and down by cable car. On route, visit the Poble Espanyol, a small-scale 'city' featuring architecture from around Spain, as well as craft workshops and regional cuisine. Adults €7. For details see: www.barcelonaturisme.com (in English) and www.poble-espanyol.com (in Catalan).

  7. Take a short trip 11 km out of town to the model village, Catalunya en Miniatura (Catalonia in Miniature), in Torrelles de Llobregat. Adults €9.50. For details see: www.catalunyaenminiatura.com and www.barcelonaturisme.com.

  8. Play volleyball on the beach.

  9. Pedal off with Bicicleta Barcelona, which organises cycling tours in English for groups and individuals. Its website, www.bicicletabarcelona.com, suggests some good routes if you have your own bike or want to hire one (at €12 for four hours) and head off on your own.

  10. Head out of town up into the Catalonian Pyrenees for a day on the pistes. Read more about skiing on www.spain.info.
