10 ways to spend an active afternoon in Berlin
Home

Getting around Berlin is easy with a €6 Tageskarte (day ticket) valid for the U-bahn (underground), bus, tram and S-bahn (surface rail) until 03.00 the next day.

If you see one, grab a copy of Checkpoint, a listings newspaper in English. Or Tip and Zitty, which are in German.

Here are 10 ways to spend an active afternoon in Berlin:

  1. Jump on bus No 100, which runs from the Zoologischer Garten station to the Prenzlauer Berg district. This will help you to get your bearings by giving you an overview of the inner city.

  2. One of Berlin's main attractions is its Zoo & Aquarium. The zoo claims to house more species than any other in the world and its enclosures were designed to recreate natural habitats.

  3. Take in the view on the glass Panorama Train, which makes three tours from the Ostbahnhof station every Saturday and Sunday. Adults €14.50, under 14s €8. For details see: www.s-bahn-berlin.de.

  4. Hire a bicycle from Pedalkraft (69 Skalitzer Str. Tel: (Berlin) 618 7772) at €10 per day and zoom around the city's cycle paths. You can take your bike on the U-bahn or S-bahn if you want to start further out of town. www.berlin-tourist-information.de lists several guided cycling tours.

  5. Take a guided walk around the city sights. Companies like Berlin Walks organise themed walking tours.

  6. By bike or on foot, follow the path of the Berlin Wall, which was the former frontier between East Germany and West Germany, to the Brandenberg Tor. Much of the wall's paved patrol path still exists and a cobblestone line marks where it has disappeared in the city centre.

  7. Visit one of Berlin's many museums. See www.berlin-tourist-information.de. The Bauhaus Museum is worth a visit. Adults €6. It is closed on Tuesday. Nearest U-bahn is Nollendorfplatz. Its website is: www.bauhaus-archiv.de.

  8. The Musikinstrumenten Museum (Musical Instrument museum) is interesting too. On Saturdays, musicians demonstrate the instruments. Adults €3. Nearest underground is Potsdamer Platz. Its website is: www.mim-berlin.de.

  9. Discover some of Berlin's hidden treasures.

  10. Take a nap in the afternoon and save your energy for Berlin's nightlife. www.berlin-tourist-information.de has some useful information for night owls.
