Home

A day ticket on Marseille's metro, trams and buses costs €4.50 (€10 for three days) and a single journey €1.60.

A €16 one-day City Pass gives you free access to public transport plus a ride on the tourist train, free entry to 14 museums and a trip to the Château d'If. Purchase the pass from the Tourist Office by the Vieux Port. For details, plus news and events see www.marseille-tourisme.com.

Here are 10 ways to spend an active afternoon in Marseille:

  1. Hop on and off the open-deck tourist buses. Adults €16 for one day - €20 for two days. Or catch the No 83 bus (€1.60 one way) along the coast to the beaches.

  2. Orientate yourself with a trip on the tourist train. Two routes operate - one visits the old town, passing the Cathedral, while the other climbs to see the panorama. Adults €5 for each journey. See www.petit-train-marseille.com (in French).

  3. Join one of the many specialist walking tours organised by the tourist office. Adults €6.5. For details see www.marseille-tourisme.com.

  4. Take the boat to the Ile d'If (and visit the Château d'If) and/or the Iles de Frioul. Entry to the Château costs €4.60. It is closed on Monday. The boat costs €10 return to the Ile d'If, €10 to the Iles de Frioul and €15 to combine the two.

  5. Visit Cassis, a picturesque village along the coast, by boat. Or by bus, which takes around 45 minutes, from the Place Castellane.

  6. Vroom off to the Musée de la Moto (motorbike museum) on the outskirts of the city - 18, Traverse St-Paul. Open 10.00 to 17.00. Tel: +33 4 91 02 29 55.

  7. Ride the rapids of the Gorges de l'Ardeche, near Marseille, on a half-day kayak or canoe trip. Adults €15. See www.canoe-ardeche.com. Or canoe in the Vallée de l'Argens. See www.provence-canoe.com (in French).

  8. Travel back in time on a steam train from Tournon to Ardeche. Adult return €20. See www.ardeche-train.com.

  9. Visit the Grotte de la Cocaliére, near Courry. A visit to the caves, which lasts about an hour, finishes with a ride on a tourist train. Adults €7. See www.grotte-cocaliere.com.
