10 ways to spend an active afternoon in Milan

A €3, 24-hour pass for Milan's metro, buses and trams means the city is yours to explore. A 48-hour pass is €5.80.

Here are 10 ways to spend an active afternoon in Milan:

  1. Start at the world's largest gothic cathedral and the hub of the city, Milan's Duomo. Admission is free of charge, but there is a dress code. Open from 07.00 to 19.00. Nearest metropolitano station is Duomo.

  2. Visit the nearby Museo del Duomo. Adults €5. The museum is closed from 12.30 to 15.00. Then pick up the latest edition of Milan Mese, a free listings magazine in English, at the tourist information office on the Piazza del Duomo.

  3. Wander around the Giardini Pubblici and the grounds of the Castello Sforzesco. Visit the Castello's Museo d'Arte Antica, which houses Michelangelo's 'Rondanini Pietá', and its Pinacoteca (art gallery). Free of charge. Open daily 09.00-17.40.

  4. Take a tour around La Scala, the opera house designed by architect Giuseppe Piermarini, who also designed the Giardini Pubblici. Nearest metro Duomo. For details see www.teatroallascala.org.

  5. Shop until you drop - at high fashion boutiques, discount outlets, factory stores and street markets. Milan has something for everyone and every budget.The English-language publication, www.hellomilano.it, has detailed shopping information, as well as news about what's on at La Scala and other events in Milan.

  6. Visit the Pinacoteca de Brera (art gallery), which was established by Napoleon. Adults €5. It is closed on Monday. Take a virtual tour before you go. Nearest metro is Montenapoleone.

  7. Climb the 108-metre Torre Branca for a bird's-eye view of the city. Adults €3. It is closed in bad weather.

  8. Tour the city by bicycle. Rossignoli (Corso Garibaldi 65-71. Tel: +39 2804960) hires out bicycles for €10 a day or €35 a week. Nearest metro is Moscova.

  9. Take a tour around the G Meazza football stadium, where AC Milan and Inter Milan play on alternate sundays. Nearest metro is Lotto.

  10. Take a trip out of town to the Lambro Valley Park (www.parcovallelambro.it) or to Lake Garda, with a visit to the Gardaland theme park for the kids.
