The
Portuguese island of Madeira in the Atlantic ocean is the ideal
location for scenic mountain walks.
You can follow the network of levadas (water
channels) that criss-cross the island and carry water downhill
for irrigation and human consumption. Some routes are easy and
some are for more experienced walkers. Guided walks are available.
Grab a bus timetable from the central
tourist office and explore the country's very
different areas. Visit waterfalls and volcanic grottoes in the north
west, dramatic mountain peaks in the north east, and the world's
second-highest sea cliffs at southern Cabo Girao.
The island, which has tropical and sub-tropical
areas, has a profusion of trees and flowers. Take the cable
car from the capital, Funchal, to the Botanical Gardens or
the Monte Palace Tropical Gardens. Or join a Madeira
Wind Birds nature tour to see endemic
birds and exotic flowers.
Take a boat out to Porto
Santo, the second largest island in the archipelago, which has
a 9 km beach. Or a catamaran to see dolphins, turtles and whales
- depending upon the season. |
