New
US Forest Service
rules for vehicles on national forests and grasslands mean that
people will be able to enjoy recreational activities while preventing
degradation of the land.
The Forest Service, which is an agency of the US
Department of Agriculture that manages 193 acres of public lands,
has implemented the regulations because more people are visiting
the national forests and grasslands in motor vehicles. It says the
increased use of motor vehicles, in particular off-highway vehicles,
affects soil, water and wildlife habitats.
Under the new rules, each national forest or ranger
district will designate specific roads, trails and areas for motor
vehicle use. Motor vehicles will not be allowed to stray from the
designated areas.
Wildlife action
Of interest too to anyone planning outdoor activities
in the US, is that wildlife agencies from all 50 US states plus
six US territories have submitted wildlife action plans for approval
by the US Fish and
Wildlife Service. The move is aimed at conserving endangered
species.
