With little money behind
the project and no prior experience, Stevie Smith and Jason Lewis
quit their office jobs on a notion that they should travel around
the world using only human power.
They cycled from the UK to Portugal and spent 111
days crossing the Atlantic ocean in a pedal boat. Jason then rollerskated
and cycled across the US, pedalled across the Pacific ocean and
is making his way across South-East Asia.
Jason Lewis has completed 25,000 miles of this Expedition
360 - roughly two-thirds of the total journey - in an attempt
to be the first person to circumnavigate the globe using just human
powered means: by bike, with a pedal boat, on rollerblades, in kayaks
and on foot.
"What could be simpler and yet more extraordinary
than for a man to circle the planet using the power of his own body?"
says Smith in Pedalling to Hawaii, published by Summersdale.
The book is Smith's account of his 'obsessive passion'
to make the expedition a reality. It documents the journey from
conception, through painstaking preparation and the adventure itself.
Far from showing the 'extraordinary' nature of the
feat, Pedalling to Hawaii highlights the reality of aspects
such as working as a team, physical fitness training, raising funds
and creating media interest. It is a must-read for anyone wanting
to embark on a similar adventure.
