Don't forget...

...to leave photocopies of the following with someone at home so they can contact relevant bodies should the need arise:

  • passport
  • credit cards
  • insurance policy (your policy number & the 24hr emergency phone number)
  • E111 (UK) or health insurance card

You may also want to keep a set of photocopies in a separate place in your luggage.

If you hand over your passport for some time, ask for a receipt. If it goes missing, ask for a statement confirming details of the disappearance.

Keep receipts of any expensive items you are carrying with you in case you need to claim on your insurance.

It is also a good idea to carry a wallet containing some small notes and change in an obvious place. Then thieves are less likely to look for your well-concealed money belt.
